NHL Prospects I Was Wrong About: Shane Wright, Easton Cowan, Beckett Sennecke (2026)

I'm here to admit my mistakes, and I'm not ashamed. As an expert in the NHL draft, I've made some errors in judgment, and I'm willing to share them with you. Today, I'll be reviewing three players I initially ranked too high or too low: Shane Wright, Easton Cowan, and Beckett Sennecke.

Shane Wright

I was high on Wright in 2022, ranking him first overall. However, I underestimated his competition. Wright had a good year, but not the defining attributes that made him a top pick. Players like Juraj Slafkovsky, Šimon Nemec, and Logan Cooley surpassed him due to their dynamic traits and feistiness. Wright may not reach my projected 30-goal, 70-point ceiling, and he's already in trade rumors. I think he lacked a certain je ne sais quoi, and his performance at the combine didn't help his case.

Eduard Sale

Sale was a risky pick for me in 2023. I ranked him too early, assuming he'd translate his Czechian junior league success to the NHL. While he has skill and a top-six-only profile, he's had challenges adapting to North American play. Some players, like Dominik Bokk and Noel Gunler, share this risk. I should have been more cautious with my rankings.

Dmitri Simashev

Simashev was a bubble first-round pick for me in 2023, but I gave too much weight to the Russian factor after the Ukraine invasion. Today, I'd rank him much lower, around the mid-rounds. His smooth skating and offense have improved, making him a top-10 pick in today's game.

Easton Cowan

Cowan was drafted in the first round of the 2023 NHL draft, but I initially ranked him much lower. I underestimated his progress and potential. He won an OHL award, put up impressive points, and became an NHLer at 20. His game has improved, and he's looked like a first-rounder since his post-draft games.

Beckett Sennecke

Sennecke was a late riser for me in 2024. I saw him play more than any other prospect and heard positive feedback. However, I was too hesitant to move him up in my rankings due to concerns about his strength and maturity. Sennecke's talent and upside were clear, and he should have been in a higher tier. I need to be more flexible in my assessments and trust the players' potential.
